Mr. Ibe’s desire to create an unbreakable watch was partly motivated by a traumatic childhood experience. When he was a school boy, he had received a precious watch as a gift from his father, who accidentally dropped it and saw it shatter into pieces on the floor.
Working hard in his laboratory on the outskirts of Tokyo, Mr. Ibe creates new prototypes for constant testing: “Day after day, I would make prototypes and drop them from the window.”
Through a moment of inspiration, he finally came up with the idea of a “floating module configuration”, as a result of seeing a girl playing with a rubber ball in the park near where she lived.
The “floating module configuration” used a hollow section between the box and the movement as a way of providing shock absorption. By supporting the movement on a minimum number of points, the movement effectively floated.
This was further combined with damping for key parts. The use of this innovative type of technology was necessary because, as Casio says: “If we tried to absorb the impacts simply by wrapping the module with urethane resin or other similar materials, the case would grow in immense proportions.”
The glass and buttons were also enclosed in urethane to protect them from impacts, with the urethane protruding above the glass to protect it. Even the band has been designed to act as a shock absorber by using a special combination of urethane resin and scratch resistant.
